Optimizing Your Feedburner Email in 10 minutes

Although I am just getting started blogging on my site, this is one post I have been aching to write even before my new website launched. Feedburner is no doubt the most popular method for emailing blog posts to subscribers. However, I think many users do not realize its potential and all the ways the service can be utilized to maximize readership and sharing. This post will take you through 5 major ways to easily optimize your Feedburner account.

I’m going to walk you through one of my client’s Feedburner’s accounts because she is really active at testing which methods work best for her readers. Keep in mind not all optimization techniques work for all types of markets. In my opinion, this is true for much of the online marketing advice out there. Sometimes generalized assumptions may not work well for your type of customers or readers. You need to experiment and test and find which method works best for your business.

(By the way, check out Barbara Bussey’s Interior Design Blog over at The Treasured Home. She has built quite a following and is becoming very well connected in the Interior Design blogging circle)
Take 10 minutes to optimize your Feedburner emails with these 5 options and you will see how powerful your blog posts can be to your subscribers.

1. To Summarize or Not to Summarize?

Well, that is the question. Did you know you do not have to email your full blog post to your subscribers? This is the default setting so most Feedburner users just leave that option as is. Isn’t the point to bring more visitors to your site? Then why not entice them with an excerpt of your post and then they will have to click to read more on your site. Barbara and I tested this versus the full summary of the post and MAN oh MAN what a difference it made in the amount of comments and click throughs to her site. Here is how you do it:

Unfortunately there is no Read More –>; link that can be added, so you need to direct the reader to click on the title to continue reading the post. It’s a workaround, but it works, as long as you keep the maximum length short enough that the reader wants more and long enough that they get an idea of what the post is about. 200 characters usually works well.

What the reader sees is this – short, sweet, and wanting more. As always tell them what you want them to do next “Click on the title to continue reading the post”.

2. Add Your Logo

You may have noticed in the screen shot above The Treasured Home’s logo next to the blog title. It never hurts to keep reminding people who you are – so use that logo of yours. It is easy to add in Feedburner – just copy and paste the URL of your logo here:

3. Subject = Blog Title

This is a big one for me. It surprises me how many people just leave the default for this one. Often times Feedburner emails will have the same static subject every time which may even be the same as the sender’s name. Therefore you receive an email that reads “The Treasured Home Blog” from “The Treasured Home” once a week. If your readers see the same subject line every week, do you really think they are excited to open that email? I certainly am not. So there is a very easy automated way to change that subject line:

4. Quick Link to Comments

One of the coolest parts of Feedburner’s many options is FeedFlare or share links in the footer. Many of you may have activated those already (please do if you haven’t yet). However, I believe one of the most effective footer links in the Feedburner email is the Comments link. Right away you can see how many comments there have been on the blog post and once readers see there are comments they are more intrigued to read the post and make a comment themselves. Here is how you do that.

And this is what it looks like in an email – a quick link to the comments of that particular post.

5. Set the Time of Email Delivery

Have you ever wondered what the best time is to send emails to your subscribers? Did you know you could change the time frame in which your post emails are sent through Feedburner? Well you can and why not test it? Barbara and I did just that and found out that super early in the morning was best for her market. Even though she lives in California, many of her blog readers live in New York. Most of her comments were made in the morning so she decided to switch her sending time from 11am Pacific Time to 1-3am Pacific/4-7 am Eastern. Many of her readers (just like myself) sip a cup of coffee and grab their smart phone or iPad and read their favorite blogs first thing in the morning (my dad is still confused why I no longer read a real newspaper – but that’s another post). Almost every morning Barbara’s posts are sitting waiting her subscriber’s inboxes when they wake up. We have seen a big jump in readership and comments because of this move.

This is how it is done. I suggest testing a different time every 60 days and see if there is a difference in activity.

SOME TIPS:

1. Make sure your the time in your WordPress settings is in YOUR time zone. This will throw the delivery timing off if it isn’t.

2. Make sure when you schedule a blog that is timed BEFORE the scheduled Email Delivery time in Feedburner. (Obvious – but I goofed on this one a couple times).

3. This screen is also where you can DEACTIVATE sending emails from Feedburner all together if you still want to keep your account active but just want to stop email service.

These are only 5 ways to optimize Feedburner emails – but there are so many more (perhaps part 2 should be written soon). However, despite my enthusiasm for Feedburner’s service and its popularity, I am not crazy about how your email list is a bit trapped in their service and not easy to access to use for other purposes and the complete lack of email styling options. Did you know that Mailchimp has a blog to email service that is way more flexible and customizable? That’s what I use. Stay tuned for that blog post soon.

Do you have any questions about other options available (or not) in Feedburner emails? I am happy to help. Leave your question below

    Hi

I add more than 10 posts to my blog daily, daily emails is very boring, and i want to send all my posts in one email weakly, can i do that with feed burner?

    thank you.

    • Ann Marie on June 19, 2012 at 10:48 am

Thanks for your comment, Aram. Unfortunately Feedburner only provides the option to deliver your posts daily – not weekly. However I am more of a fan of Mailchimp’s RSS to email service (a post on that to come soon). They provide more flexibility in the design and options. With their service you can choose to send out your blog emails daily, weekly and even monthly. here is a link to more information about that: http://mailchimp.com/features/rss-to-email/ (Scroll down to Frequency).

Hi Ann, Hi I add more than 10 posts to my Blog daily, feedburner is mailing 10 posts daily. I want to send all my articles posted in a day to the subscribers. How to setup the same.

  2. Shelley from Ground Beef Budget on July 12, 2012 at 5:26 pm

I want my feed to be an excerpt of my post but it looks like my photos won’t show if I do that??? and I want my photos to show up. Is there anyway around that?

    • Ann Marie on July 12, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Shelley, you are right if you use the summary burner in Feedburner then no images show however there is a hack you can try in WordPress to make it work: http://webdesignzo.com/show-featured-images-in-rss-feed-feedburner/ I haven’t tried it myself, but it’s worth a shot. Of course you can always sign up for a free account over at Mailchimp and have much more control of your layout and design through their RSS to email service.

  3. Mike Volkin on July 16, 2012 at 8:03 am

great post. I have a tip of the day and I currently use Mailchimp. I am hoping feedburner can do this for free. Is there a way to set up a post every day and have feedburner automatically send the days posts without me doing it manually

    • Ann Marie on July 16, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Mike, thanks for leaving a comment and your question. Yes Feedburner can send automatic daily emails from daily blog posts for free. The big problem is there is no way to currently import your email list over to Feedburner. Your subscribers would have to resubscribe to your Feedburner list which is no fun. Are you using Mailchimp’s RSS to email service? Although you pay, you can set up your blog posts to be sent daily and preschedule all your daily posts in WordPress. If you already have a large growing list in Mailchimp this is the best way to go.

  4. Shane on July 19, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Is there a way to send the whole post to email *minus* the graphic/image that’s in the post? Or do we have to send a summary only to get it graphic-less?

    • Ann Marie on July 19, 2012 at 3:24 pm

That is a great question Shane and one I had a difficult time finding the answer to, despite research. I don’t see a way to do that except perhaps going into your Feedburner settings, click on Optimize, then Summary Burner. Set the maximum characters to 9000 and clear out the teaser. I believe the Summary teaser is text-only and strips out any HTML or images. The thing is I am not sure if there is a limit to those maximum characters but you can test it. There is always Mailchimp’s RSS to email service where you have a LOT more control over the layout and look of your feeds. Time for me to do a post on that!

  5. Stacey on August 15, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Is there a way for me to edit a post that has already been delivered without it being re-sent to my subscribers? Thanks for your help.

    • Ann Marie on August 15, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Thanks for visiting the blog, Stacey. Feedburner only retrieves posts that are new and they do that by finding the publish date of the post. So as long as you edit a post and do not change the publish date, then you should be fine.

  6. Jimbo Paleo on September 5, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Hi Ann… what a helpful article. I have already made several changes, based on what you wrote above.

One thing, I would like to only send one email a week, instead of every day. Do you know how to do that?

    Thanks again…

    ==>Jim

    • Ann Marie on September 5, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Jim – Nice website you got there. To answer your question, Feedburner only has one option – to change the time you want your email sent out. Then Feedburner will push out your post the same day you post. Once again, Mailchimp RSS-to-email feature DOES have a weekly option and all the posts you published within that week will get pushed out to subscribers. I keep saying it but it certainly is time for me to write that post on how to use Mailchimp’s RSS to email service. It’s easy, free and customizable. I’ll include steps on how to move subscribers over from Feedburner. Thanks for your question 😉

  7. Anne @ Webicurean on September 12, 2012 at 3:03 pm

Hello–I have some older content (not on WP) that I need to integrate into my new WP site, but I don’t want Feedburner sending out emails while I do this. Is the best way to handle this to deactivate email delivery while I do this? If so, is this going to cause my current subscribers to get removed or cause some other weird problem? It seems temporarily deactivating email delivery shouldn’t do anything to my subscriber list, but you never know… and I can’t seem to find this addressed anywhere. hope this makes sense. thanks!

    • Ann Marie on September 13, 2012 at 11:22 am

Anne, I love your site. You have a good question and one that I have encountered before when transferring a site and all its content. You have the right plan. Deactivate delivery in Feedburner and before you turn back on just make sure you have no posts published within the past 24 hours because Feedburner scans for the most recent posts daily. Good luck.

      • Anne @ Webicurean on September 14, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Thanks so much! That’s exactly what I wanted to hear!

      • Hillary on July 24, 2014 at 9:45 am

I was wondering if the advice you gave Anne on September 13, 2012 was still valid. I am posting an announcement on my website that I don’t want to be sent out to my feedburner list. I want it simply to be on my blog page. Do I need to deactivate feedburner before I post the announcement and keep it off for 24 hours after I post it to ensure that my feedburner list does not receive the announcement?

Thanks!! This article is so helpful. Feedburner is great and free but really frustrating in its lack of customer support.

        • Ann Marie on July 24, 2014 at 2:51 pm

Hello Hillary. Glad you found this old post helpful. Google no longer supports Feedburner so there is not much info out there. We are lucky that they haven’t deleted the service entirely like they have with so many of their products. I highly recommend switching to Mailchimp as there is much more control over your feed sent via email. There is a 3 part series on my blog on how to move from Feedburner to Mailchimp (and move all your subscribers over too!). Now on to your question. I see you are using SquareSpace. If in WordPress I could tell you of a plugin that allows you to exclude a post from a feed making it much easier. Yes I do recommend the method of deactivating your feed for 24 hours and before reactivating make sure you have another more recent post that can be pulled from Feedburner instead of your announcement. That should work but I can never be 100% sure with Feedburner. Also keep in mind that no new subscribers can sign up for emails when deactivated. Hope that helps and thanks for visiting my blog. You have a beautiful site.

Good article – I’ve used your advices !!

Somehow I cannot subscribe to your blog. Nothing happens when I press the submit button.

    • Ann Marie on September 15, 2012 at 11:15 pm

OMG Heidi! Thank you so much. I was wondering why I was receiving no signups. That darn signup plugin wasn’t working and I didn’t know it. I have spent 2 hours looking for a better replacement and found a great plugin. Will write a post about it. Please come back to the site now and sign up for future blog posts if you want. I owe you a beverage of your choice!! Cheers.

Thank you for this article. I have question, How do we give advice to Feedburner so they provide a lot of choice in the delivery of mail, not just daily but weekly. Because we know we are receiving emails every day from the same sources of information would be very boring. Thanks and Greetings, Ann

  14. David on March 4, 2013 at 8:06 am

    Hi,

Do you know how can I edit the footer of the feed? I want to change the texts of google.

    Thanks.

    • Ann Marie on March 5, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Sorry David, there is no way to change the Google mailing address or the message “Email delivery powered by Google” in the footer. They really “Own” your email feed which is why I recommend changing to an email marketing service such as Mailchimp.

  15. David on March 6, 2013 at 12:55 am

Hi Anne Marie, thanks for your reply!
One more thing: it is possible to translate the message of the feed footer: “You are subscribed to email updates from xxx
To stop receiving these emails, you may unsubscribe now.”, can I translate?
I need this text in Spanish because most of my visitors don’t speak English!
    Thanks again!
    Regards

    • Ann Marie on March 6, 2013 at 9:17 am

David, don’t know if you have tried this yet, but in Feedburner settings go to Optimize –> Browser Friendly –> then under Appearance Options select Spanish as your theme. Let me know if that changes the language in the footer.

  16. Kari on March 13, 2013 at 10:16 am

This is a great post. Thanks so much! I was only doing a couple of these, but have now added the post summary, my blog logo, and Feed Flare 🙂

YAY! Kari, so glad this post helped you.

  17. Lucy on March 14, 2013 at 10:03 am

Hi there! I am wondering if you can help me Ann Marie… my Feedburner email suddenly starts to come with a different “From” name. It used to come with my blog’s name, now it´s coming with the first part of the email adress. I think it could be some plugin that I installed, but I am not sure. Am I being clear? I don’t know how to explain better, sorry!

    • Ann Marie on March 14, 2013 at 10:47 am

Lucy, thanks for stopping by my blog. What I would do is go into your Feedburner settings at Feedburner.com, click on the Publicize tab then Email Subscriptions. Then under Communications Preferences look at what address is in the “From” field. You can change that here. If you ware meaning the subject link of the Feedburner email, that is changed under Email Branding. Hope that helps and answers your question.

      • Lucy on March 14, 2013 at 11:02 am

Hmmm, unfortunely is not about that. In fact I didn’t change these fileds before and at the ” From” field is my email, which I would like to keep, so the subscriber can reply the mail if they want so.The feedburner email is coming with a “From” that is not set in anywhere in my feedburner settings. This is driving me crazy =S

        • Lucy on March 14, 2013 at 11:04 am

But thanks for you attention Ann Marie! Really appreciated =)

  19. Simi on April 3, 2013 at 6:53 am

This was an amazing post and it helped me so much. The aspect of blogging that i struggle with the most is all the technology. for some reason my feed burner has 3 feeds… 🙁 all three from my blog. is it normal ? can you help me figure why ?

  20. Kim on April 9, 2013 at 7:43 am

Wow! Great post, so helpful! I have been “wandering around” feedburner afraid to click on anything! Thanks for empowering me to make better use of it.

  21. Simi on April 12, 2013 at 5:54 am

I did all these changes last week and loved it. However after the changes i realized on flip board my feed had no images but a pink box that say email and when you click on that it goes to my post. How do I resolve that – plz help

    • Simi on April 12, 2013 at 8:55 am

on flipboard – no pix shows on feed
on pulse it shows an ugly pink box with email written on it.

    • Ann Marie on April 13, 2013 at 7:12 am

Simi, I sent you an email. I loaded your feed to my flipcoard and it looked fine. I just searched for your website from within Flipboard and added your blog. looks fine to me that way.

  22. Charley on May 2, 2013 at 11:01 am

    Hi Ann,
    Great article!

I’ve only just set up feedbuner this week, so got quite a lot to get my head around… and I’m not even sure if it’s working. I subscribed myself, so I could see what was happening, published an article last night, but did not receive an email this morning .
I read your point: ‘2. Make sure when you schedule a blog that is timed BEFORE the scheduled Email Delivery time in Feedburner.’
Are you just suggesting that you publish you blog entry before the feedburner delivery time? Or is there something I’m missing?
    Thanks,
    Charley

    • Ann Marie on May 2, 2013 at 11:36 am

Yes Charley. You are correct. However since you are in a different timezone and country than I you need to be careful that your feedburner and WordPress time zones match up correctly. In Feedburner go to Publicize, Email Delivery and Delivery Options and select your time zone. In WordPress go to Settings, then General to select your time zone. If all is right in the world…then that should work.

Lovely site you have and beautiful photography. I have signed up for your blog 😉 Good luck.

  23. Charley on May 3, 2013 at 5:59 pm

    Hi Ann Marie,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I made those changes to the timezone and it worked. My first emailed blog post!
I have just read your latest articles on migrating to Mailchimp, so that’s next on the list.
Thanks again for your help and great blog posts!

Thanks Stephanie. So nice of you to stop by and leave such a complimentary comment. Made my day. Happy the information was helpful and trust me once the set up procedure is finished with Mailchimp you will love it so much better.

  27. Sharon @ Life After Empty Nest on June 6, 2013 at 7:54 pm

This was such a useful post! I used several of your suggestions that I didn’t know about.
I LOVE the Summary Part! I always hated that many of my readers didn’t actually visit the blog! Hopefully now they will.
One question – I discovered that my emails were not going out, and it was a ping glitch that I think I have fixed but meanwhile several posts have been written and never seen by my subscribers. Is the only way to resend the email by changing the publishing date?

    • Ann Marie on June 7, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Thanks for leaving a comment Sharon. I truly appreciate it. Yes you are right. The best way to capture those posts in an email that your subscribers missed, would be to reset the publish date/time somewhere between the last 12 hours or so so the email picks them up. It will summarize all the post excerpts in one email.

  28. Sarah on June 10, 2013 at 2:35 pm

I am using this with blogger and I am having an issue where I have subscribers (myself included) but they do not receive an email after a new post is published (even days later). I’ve activated the ping but still does not work. Any thoughts on what I could be missing?

    • Ann Marie on June 12, 2013 at 1:18 am

Oh boy Sarah, it could be many different things. I would have to take alook at your feedburner account to see what is going on. You can email me at amgill@cascadevalleydesigns.com if you want me to dig further and find the problem.

    Hi Ann Marie,

I really liked your article and am new to feedburner. I followed your advice listed in your comments and deactivated by email delivery to my blog (actually it is a homeowner’s association blog that I voluntarily have taken over this year for someone else). I went back a couple days later to turn it back on after doing some design changes and my subscriber list is now at zero (it was originally at 170+). I have no idea what could have happened. Do you know of a way to get back my list without re-subscribing everyone? I did happen to download a csv file of the subscriber list right before I deactivated but I really don’t want to look like an idiot with my whole neighborhood and have them sign up again. I’d appreciate any advice you could provide.

    thanks,
    wendy

  32. Allison on July 19, 2013 at 9:32 am

Ann Marie, thank you for the great post! Wish I had seen it when I first started blogging back in November. Nevertheless, I still have a few related questions that maybe you can help me with.
    1. Do you know how to get Feedburner to send a summary of the week’s posts to my subscribers? I post 3x/wk and would love to give them a chance to read something they may have missed or forgotten about. I see other bloggers do it, but I don’t know how.
    2. I cannot get Feedburner to display my photo in the logo area. I don’t really know what the right URL is…I put in the URL to About.Me that has my photo but it doesn’t work.
    3. I haven’t used Feedflare. Since my subscribers receive their Feedburner email shortly after the new post has posted, I thought there was no point in showing that there have been no comments. How do you use it?
    Thanks so much, in advance.

    • Ann Marie on July 20, 2013 at 9:32 am

      Hello Allison,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Glad you found it helpful. To answer your questions:
      1) Feedburner does not offer the option of weekly updates, only daily. Once more reason for switching to Mailchimp to send your blog emails as they do offer many options such as weekly or monthly post summaries. I have a full guide on how to move from Feedburner to Mailchimp if you are interested: https://cascadevalleydesigns.com/?p=2051
      2) You are right. Pulling from About.Me is probably not going to work. You will need to upload your logo to your website and take that URL. I looked at your site and could not find your logo.
      3) True, no point in showing Feedflare comments if you don’t have them but you can always look at it another way. At least there is a quick link for them to leave a comment. My client has many comments so it shows up with at least a few initially.
      Thanks for the great questions!

      • Allison on July 31, 2013 at 9:23 am

Thank you for your informative reply, Ann Marie. Sorry it’s taken me so long to acknowledge it. Thanks for letting me know that Feedburner can’t send multiple posts (although on a couple of occasions, it did so on its own, lol!), so I can’t give up on trying to “figure it out”! I may look into the free version of Mail Chimp if I don’t have to ask my subscribers to re-subscribe — I’m afraid they won’t do it, lol!

    • Ann Marie on August 10, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Yes. Go into the Feedburner settings and change the delivery time to later today. Then after the email is successfully sent out, change back your delivery time back to the original time.

This is an excellent post! Thanks so much for the detailed instructions. For some reason though, in my feedburner, I have three separate accounts for the same website, all with varying subscriber numbers. Is there a way I can combine the three of them without losing any subscribers?

On another note- Is there any way yet so that subscribers get an email when a new post is posted, as opposed to once a day? This one setting may be enough to make me move to another service… which I really don’t want to do, as it would be a huge hassle!

    Thanks so much.

    • Ann Marie on August 16, 2013 at 10:17 pm

Thanks for the comment and questions, Caroline. To answer your questions about merging your subscribers…there is no easy way to do that in Feedburner. You would have to download the CSV (Excel) file of the subscribers to each and then upload those to the same list in a new email marketing program – I recommend Mailchimp since it is very user friendly, has many options and is free for up to 2000 email addresses. Mailchimp does not have any more frequent email sends than daily. The only way you can send out your emails right after you post is to set up Jetpack plugin if you are using WordPress, but I am unsure if you can import subscribers to that. Hope that helps a little 😉

    Hi Ann Mari,

Hope you can help me solve this problem.

My website is using a dark theme and and all the words I have to chagne to write color. In my website (http://runhotel.hk) it displays ok since the background is in black color. However, when some people receive in their email, the words will be in white color and they are unable to read. What can I do? Can I edit my RSS format in feedburn ?

Do you have any suggestion ?

    Regards,
    Vincent

    • Ann Marie on September 17, 2013 at 1:29 am

Sorry Vincent I am not aware of any way to edit the CSS of Feedburner. You would have more control in Mailchimp. I wrote a guide on how to move from Feedburner to Mailchimp if interested/

  42. Chistine on October 15, 2013 at 3:50 pm

thank you for sharing your knowledge! I too was having trouble getting Feedburner to actually send my blog out via email to my subscribers. I changed the delivery time, nothing. Then under delivery options I saw the deactivate button so I thought that might work as a “reboot” and get it to send. I immediately reactivated. My subscribers list is still there. Have I screwed up?

After reading your post, and with all the relentless issues I have with Feedburner, I think I’m switching to mailchimp if I can do so without disrupting my subscribers. Thanks for the hint. So frustrating to try to “make’ feedburner do what it seems it’s meant for!

    • Ann Marie on October 21, 2013 at 5:09 pm

Christine, were you ever able to get this resolved? Feel free to private message me via email if you want me to take a look at your Feedburner account and investigate further on a solution. (amgill@cascadevalleydeisgns.com)

  45. Traci on November 7, 2013 at 9:08 am

Thanks for the great post, Ann Marie. I see you answered the question about how to deactivate FB when uploading new posts. Perfect answer. Thanks! Quick follow up question. Will I need to resync my FB after I activate it again? (Under Troubleshootize–>Resync Now). I read somewhere that I may need to do that, but would like to get your two cents. Thanks so much!

    • Ann Marie on November 8, 2013 at 6:48 am

Traci, Thanks for your question. You don’t have to Resync after you activate. The activation should resync on its own….then again, it will not hurt to make that extra step and it is a good way to double check everything is working ok.

  46. Suzie on November 10, 2013 at 10:00 am

Great article! Thanks for writing it. My question is how can I get FB to include my photo in the email. In the past, FB has included my full post, including the photos, in the email. The email for my most recent post did not include the photo. Do you have any idea what might have caused this to change?

    • Ann Marie on November 13, 2013 at 9:50 pm

Suzie, I do not know what caused it to change. Very strange. I have used this plugin before int WordPress. It is outdated but still works – http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-rss-images/

      • Suzie on November 14, 2013 at 3:21 am

Thank you for the response. I will give that a try.

Hi Ann Marie -I just want to thank you for this step by step post. I set the feedburner up 2 years ago when I was taking a WP.org class. I couldn’t find where to change the delivery time! And the other tips were great as well. Thanks again.

Thanks Noreen for the nice compliments. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

  48. Donna Wilkes on November 13, 2013 at 3:00 pm

Lots of info I did not know. Thank you and I hope you can help me. Feedburner is no longer sending out my posts by email. It says I have reached the limit. I did not know I had to adjust the size of the feed. I pinged and it said it was successful and I changed the amount of each post sent. Am I dead in the water for the rest of the year or is there some way to resume sending the emails even though I have reached the limit?

    • Ann Marie on November 13, 2013 at 9:57 pm

Donna, I was actually contacted about the maxed out feed size before and was able to fix it in WordPress but you are using blogspot so not sure where the settings would be. If you can find a place in your blogspot settings to change the number of posts in your feed settings, I would reduce that down to 3 or 5 and then resync your feed in Troubleshooting tab in Feedburner. Hope that works

      • Donna Wilkes on November 14, 2013 at 7:26 am

Ann Marie, I sincerely appreciate your help. Last night I followed your instructions above plus some in the troubleshooting part of Feedburner. I changed and saved until my settings I thought were just like the ones above. This morning I received the three latest posts in summary form in my email. However the subject line read ${latestitemTitle} instead of the title, but there were three posts. Boy, did my readers come flocking after a week of virtually no one! I am a small blog with small blog friends. If I write a post about Feedburner limits which no one knew about, may I include a link back to you?

        • Ann Marie on November 14, 2013 at 9:25 am

I don’t know what happened to the subject line because you are supposed to have ${latestItemTitle} in the subject line to show your title. If it keeps happening, paste this into the Email Subject line: ${latestItemTitle} again (under Email subscriptions/email branding in FB) and Save. maybe it needs to be reset and resaved. Glad to hear you are at least getting your posts sent again. Of course you can link back to my site/post. Thank you very much!

This is a great post! I excitedly implemented numbers 2&4 (My husband had already done 3&5 for me). I’m nervous about #1 because I’m worried my readers will be annoyed about having to click through and then they’ll unsubscribe. But I’m giving it a shot anyways just to see. Taking a risk I guess! Thanks again for the article – it was very helpful and I pinned it to my writing board on Pinterest!

    • Ann Marie on January 31, 2014 at 12:52 am

Thanks Cheri, Sometimes it can be the settings of your feed on your site. Do you use WordPress. If so go to Settings > Reading > and select Summary for Show each article in the feed. if you use a different platform there shouldbe a similar option in your settings. For showing a feed…selection of Full Article or Summary. Good luck and thanks for stopping by.

    hi ann Marie
Very helpful post. i have a question: I post sponsored guest posts on my blog but don’t want them to go out to my email subscribers. How could I deactivate feedburner temporarily without deleting my feed and my email list ? would i deactivate on the delivery options section? many thanks.

    • Ann Marie on January 31, 2014 at 12:47 am

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. You have a very good question. I was going to tell you how to go into Feedburner and pause the feed and then later turn back on until I stumbled upon the Feed Pauser Plugin. Hopefully you have WordPress because this is so dang easy! Here are the instructions on how to use it. it is a depreciated/old plugin and there is a warning to load it but I just tested it and it works fine. Hope that helps 😉

  58. richard nahem on January 31, 2014 at 12:49 am

    hi
thanks for getting back to me so quickly.i use type pad , so i would need to know how to do it through feedburner.

    • Ann Marie on January 31, 2014 at 12:58 am

Well that was a little presumptuous of me. I love WordPress so much i just thick everyone should use it 😉 So to turn off Feedbuner, go to Publicize > Email Subscriptions and scroll down to the tiny button on the bottom right – Deactivate. Before you publish the next post you want to send out via email then go back to the same place in Feedburner and click Activate

  59. Chris on February 9, 2014 at 3:37 am

Fantastic summary and some really good tips. Shame that there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to send a preview image as well (I read about your suggested “hack” but as I don’t use the WP RSS feed I don’t think I cna use it.

Nonetheless, that’s icing on the cake. Thanks once again for a great article.

  61. John on April 9, 2014 at 10:51 pm

At last someone wrote a really useful article about FB!
I was setting this up lately for the first time and I came so many meaningless articles before landing here – many thanks, great job!

  62. John on April 9, 2014 at 11:35 pm

PS: after posting my previous message, I noticed something here I don’t well understand:

Below this message box here, I get 2 checkboxes that seem to be Jetpack’s modules and one of them is offering to signup for your Newsletter. Besides that fact that I checked this box and nothing happened – I didn’t receive any subscription notification from wp.com – I also noticed that also have a FB subscription box at top right sidebar of this current page.

How do you manage to have 2 different newsletter subscription modules for the same site? Is this really manageable?

    Thanks.

    • Ann Marie on April 10, 2014 at 12:07 am

Thanks John for stopping by and leaving your comments. Funny how I get the most comments on this post because I dont actually use Feedburner anymore for blog feed emails, but Mailchimp. In fact I wrote a 3 part series on how to move from FB to MC and why it should be done: https://cascadevalleydesigns.com/how-to-move-from-feedburner-to-mailchimp-full-guide-part-1-exportingimporting-your-email-subscribers/. So the checkbox on the comment and the sidebar to signup for my newsletter is through Mailchimp and it looks like that is all broken because I need to update to the latest version. Thanks for letting me know 🙂

      • John on April 10, 2014 at 1:03 am

You are welcome and yes I’ve seen the other 3 series and they are also excellent. Please note that although I didn’t get any notification in order to confirm my subscription I still got notifications for your replies and new posts published – in fact I got one for the previous comment.

This is a great post for trial-and-error, learn-it-yourself bloggers! Thank you!

I’ve had a blog for a few years but am recently having trouble with my Feedburner emails going out to yahoo subscribers. (Well, I know that at least gmail subscribers are receiving them, but it suddenly stopped working for yahoo subscribers.) Is there a reason this would happen? Just curious if you have ever come across this issue!

    Thanks!

        • John on April 14, 2014 at 7:01 pm

Yes, that’s right and this is not only related to FB. I had similar issues and lots of headaches with other websites and mailing lists. If you care about your mental health, stay away from Yahoo and if someone offers you a Yahoo account for free JUST SAY NO!

          • Cheri on May 26, 2014 at 5:37 pm

I have been having this problem where I leave a comment on a blog..the comment posts to the blog, but I will get a “Delivery Failure” notice in my SPAM folder in my yahoo account. IS this what you are talking about here? If so.. what if I dont’ have another email account at other than Yahoo? I mean, do I have to start using like Gmail and open an account there and put that email addy in? Will everything go to that email addy and not the addy I have attached to my blog through Yahoo? I have an gmail email account, but dont use it.. I just had to have it to use Blogger But that also aggrivates this problem because if I leave the comment as “Anonymos” I don’t get the delivery failure email. But if I leave the comment as my Google account, I get the email. If I do have to get another email server.. who do you suggest?

          • Ann Marie on May 27, 2014 at 8:51 am

I am not sure if that is the same Yahoo problem but you can test it. What you can do is open your gmail account and in the settings (go to the geat wheel, then settings) and Foward your gmail address to your Yahoo address. So you will still sign into make a comment with gmail but all emails coming through to you will still be seen through your Yahoo email account.

  64. Katie Wassink on May 20, 2014 at 4:06 am

Thank you for this helpful walk-through. It has certainly made my navigation of Feedburner much simpler. Have you ever experienced Feedburner not sending out scheduled emails? Such is the case for me. Albeit, it was working up until 2 posts ago. If you have any insights or suggestions on this I would be most appreciative! Thanks in advance.

    • Ann Marie on May 20, 2014 at 11:01 am

There could be a variety of reasons why Feedburner is not working properly. Your feed is up to date so that is good. Try this: Go into your Feedburner account, select the troubleshootize tab and then click the Resync now button (down the page a bit). See if that works. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  65. Cheri on May 26, 2014 at 5:32 pm

You have been so helpful! I swear.. I read and re read on the Feedburner site and didn’t understand so much, but your blog post…wow.. not as hard as FB makes it sound.
However, one question… on the part where you summarize the post it says.
“,,,why not entice them with an excerpt of your post and then they will have to click to read more on your site”. Do you have to change the content in this box on FB for every post you publish? Or is there a universal option that will automatically take the first 200 characters of a post and put that in there and then I add instruction to click the title to go to the post in the content box and that stays there?
Thank you so much for your help!
    Cheri

    • Ann Marie on May 27, 2014 at 8:46 am

Thanks for stopping by Cheri. I am glad this post helped you. Once you set up the excerpt in Feedburner it will dynamically take the first 200 characters of every post. Only need to set up that one time.

      • Cheri on May 27, 2014 at 10:11 am

Thanks so much. I will give it a try.

  66. Luke on June 12, 2014 at 3:30 am

  67. Anjali on June 12, 2014 at 3:18 pm

Hi! Great post! I have a food blog and wanted to try and make feedburner send everything for a post except for the final recipe. In other words they would have to click on the link title or at the bottom that would send them to my blog for the recipe in the end. Is there a way to do this? Thank you!

    • Ann Marie on June 17, 2014 at 8:10 am

Hell Anjali, only thing I can recommend is set your Summary Burner to a set number of maximum characters and your Teaser can say click the title to read the recipe. BUT you would have to be careful to always have that amount of characters written before your recipe.

    2. Can we customize feedburner mail. If yes then please share the tutorial.

Hello there. Not sure if you still need answers. I have been very busy with projects over the past few months. But here is a stab at some answers for you: 1) You can only send one email a day but if you post several times a day it will include all the posts you published in those 24 hours. 2) Unfortunately there is not much you can customize with Feedburner. i suggest moving to Mailchimp and there is a tutorial on my site. It is free fro up to 2000 email addresses and can be customized. 3) https://cascadevalleydesigns.com/how-to-move-from-feedburner-to-mailchimp-full-guide-part-1-exportingimporting-your-email-subscribers/

Thanks for this great article. I was going to switch to Mailchimp, but once I was in Mailchimp it seemed way harder to use. They also insist on a street address on the emails and I’m a blogger, so I’m not going to give my home address or get a P.O. Box.

Anyway, your tips on feedburner are so easy to follow and are so smart! I loved this blog. I will share it because it’s that good.

    • Ann Marie on April 23, 2015 at 12:28 am

M, Thanks for stopping by. Yes it is a requirement for all email marketing programs to add an email address. BUT you can actually add your website address or a fake address. no one really checks those. Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your comments.

    • Ann Marie on April 23, 2015 at 12:36 am

Unfortunately Feedburner is not that sophisticated to send a test. A bummer for sure.

    Ann Marie,
It’s me again. (sorry about my first inquiry twice!) Your article got me thinking. Which is what good ideas and writing should do. Kudos.
If I post a blog on my site that I do NOT want feedburner to push to email (for whatever reason), and I deactivate Feedburner, (as you suggest I can do), does this simply stop pushing content that was published until I reactivate? In other words, can I assume that when I reactivate Feedburner it will only push forthcoming content and NOT the Blog that I published on my site DURING the “deactivity?”
    Thanx again.
    Shelly

    • Ann Marie on April 23, 2015 at 12:52 am

No problem Shelley – sorry for the late reply. Do you have a WordPress site? If so you can add a plugin to exclude a post form the feed: https://wordpress.org/plugins/rss-filter/ That is the easiest method. Otherwise if I were you I would hide the post for about 24 hours until the email goes out then turn back on. This response may be a little too late for you to activate this suggestion but maybe it will help someone else. Thanks for stopping by.

    • Ann Marie on May 24, 2015 at 11:45 am

Yes there is a way to only send titles in feedburner. Under Optimize tab > Summary Burner, set the maximum length to 0 and delete anything in Teaser box – then Save. Then only titles will be sent in the email. Thanks for stopping by my blog, Sujith.

I set up Feedburner for a friend. Now I have transferred it to her. But when people reply to the email that they get its still coming to me. How can I fix it so that they go to her?

    • Ann Marie on June 9, 2015 at 10:43 pm

The reply email is delivered to the gmail account that Feedburner is under. If you still have that feed under your account you may want to delete it….if it is indeed now listed under her Google account. Thanks for your comment and stopping by.

  83. Laura on July 13, 2015 at 7:33 am

    Hello Ann Marie!
I am hoping you can instruct me here.
I have a self-hosted WordPress blog, and I insert the READ MORE tag html, right where I want it, for each post, as I create the post in my editor dashboard.
Is there a way that that customized placement I do for each post, can be reflected in the Feedburner subscription notification that my subscribers get? In other words….I don’t want my sibscribers to get the full post (or they won’t click through and I won’t get the traffic), but I don’t want my feedburner set to a specific number of characters either. I want the summary I set in each post, to reflect the same in what my readers get.
I hope that isn’t clear as mud. I am very much hoping you understand and can help me. THANK YOU for your time and efforts.

    • Ann Marie on July 13, 2015 at 5:26 pm

Hello Laura. Yes I do understand what you are asking. It makes perfect sense that you want to control the excerpts that show up on each post that is sent through Feedburner. Since you have a self hosted WordPress site, you may want to try this plugin: mPress Custom Feed Excerpts. I haven’t tested it myself but it is worth a shot. It sounds like it does what you need….but not sure how Feedburner handes that. I would experiment and change your WP settings > Reading to Full Text and Feedburner should pick up to Read More

I am trying to send post excerpts via SMS to subscribers/members. Do you have any idea if this can be done with Feedburner? I know that Cloudpipes was going to do something like this, but doesn’t seem to have happened.

    Thanks for any ideas.

  86. Doreen on September 8, 2015 at 10:54 am

Hi Ann Marie – thanks so much for sharing this info!

I have recently imported my Blogger blog into Squarespace and would now like to have my FeedBurner subscribers receive the new feed. Here is what I think I should do, but would love to know if I am missing any steps!

    1) In FeedBurner replace “Original Feed” with new blog RSS
    2) In SQSP/ blog page / settings/ syndication put the FeedBurner “Feed Address” in the RSS Feed Replacement URL box
    3) Disable the Post Feed Redirect url in Blogger

Do I need to burn the Squarespace Blog feed in FeedBurner first? (but I want it to come from the same “Feed Address” as before).

Will this forward both RSS and Email subscriptions?

    Thank you so much!

    • Ann Marie on September 8, 2015 at 1:25 pm

Hello Doreen. Thanks for stopping by. Congratulations for moving away from blogger to your own website and domain. Its beautiful! Your steps and order looks correct to me. Yes all your old subscribers will receive the new posts after you make the switch. It looks like the feed address to update in Feedburner in “Original Feed” would be this: http://stylemaniac.com/blog?format=rss Since I do not know SquareSpace as well as WordPress I cannot be 100% sure. Add your Feedburner address in the syndication field in SS and then check the feedburner address in your browser to see if it indeed has your new posts. If so you are good to go. Yes delete/disable any blog signups in Blogger. Do you plan to redirect the old blogger site to the new site?

    • Ann Marie on June 20, 2016 at 4:27 am

suresh, thanks for visiting my blog. Yes you can set up the feed to JUST pull a certain category. So set up Feedburner with something like http://www.aufastupdates.com/results if results is the category of posts you want to push out to subscribers. Any posts NOT in that category will not be emailed.

Hi! Thanks for the blog post, which proved to be very helpful to me. I was not aware of the fact, that the setup options are so vast for FeedBurner. I take the opprtunity to address a tiny question to the expert: I can activate more FeedFlares, when I save the them, my selection is gone again. Do you have any hint for my, what could be the trouble here? Best regards Matt

    • Ann Marie on July 17, 2016 at 8:47 pm

Thanks for visiting and commenting Matt. I tried out the Feedflare tool and it is not working for me either. Seems others have the same issue. See this Google Groups thread. There is a suggestion to try a different browser, like Firefox, but I had no luck there either. I am afraid Google will not fix this problem because Feedburner is no longer getting any support from them. Its a dying/dead product in their eyes.

One the things I personally hate about feedburner is sending the whole blog post as an email when my purpose was to redirect them to my blog.

I’ve never been familiar with most of the feedburners’ features but you just thought me how to do that successfully. I will quickly login and do the settings.

    Thanks.

Faisal. That would be my suggestion – set max length to zero and then it should only send the title. I believe a preview shows before you save so you may be able to get an idea before saving. But with Feedburner it is one of those things you just need to test.

    Hello Ann Marie,
for me is very difficult to get working feedburner. Particularly when I am in fed Analyze page I get a strange message:
“Your feed is so new, we’re still playing with the bubble wrap. Check back soon for a full dose of stats” and don’t receive updates from my feedburner newsletter. Besides, on the right of my feed name I read always “0 Subscribers”, while in Publicize page I read not zero subscribers. Can you help me?
    Greetings

    • Ann Marie on March 13, 2020 at 3:37 pm

Its hard. Feedburner is old and not supported any longer so bugs are going to happen with no way of fixing them, unfortunately. So if this is a new feed it takes 1-2 days to show up/show stats or perhaps that is broken too. Did you know you can start a Mailchimp account for free for up to 2000 subscribers? They have an RSS to email template to use.

From what I’ve heard, FeedBurner should have suspended the email service back in the summer of 2021, but we can see that it is still working. Should I abandon FeedBurner? It is possible that FeedBurner has changed its plans and will not cancel this service? It is interesting to hear your opinion, what do you think about this. Thanks.
